About Dachshund
The Dachshund, affectionately known as the “sausage dog” or “weiner dog,” is one of the most recognisable breeds in the world, thanks to its long body and short legs. Originating from Germany, the breed was developed to hunt badgers, rabbits, and small game — their name literally means “badger hound.” Dachshunds come in three coat types — smooth, long-haired, and wire-haired — and two sizes: standard (16–32 lbs) and miniature (under 11 lbs). Their coats can appear in a wide variety of colours including red, cream, chocolate, black and tan, or dapple patterns. These intelligent, lively little dogs are full of personality. Though small, they are bold, curious, and affectionate, forming close bonds with their families. Dachshunds make loyal companions who love playtime and cuddles but also need regular exercise to maintain a healthy weight. With proper training, socialisation, and patience, they adapt wonderfully to family life and bring plenty of charm and energy to any home.

Dachshund FAQs
How much does a Dachshund cost in Ireland?
A purebred Dachshund puppy in Ireland typically costs between €1,000 and €1,800, depending on size, coat type, and breeder reputation.
Are Dachshunds good family pets?
Yes, they are affectionate and loyal dogs who thrive on companionship. They are great with older children but can be a bit stubborn, so early training and patience are key.
Which Dachshund type is the calmest?
The long-haired Dachshund is generally considered the calmest of the three varieties, with a gentler and more relaxed temperament compared to smooth or wire-haired types.
Do Dachshunds bark a lot?
Yes, they can be quite vocal and alert, often barking to announce visitors or unusual sounds. Consistent training helps manage their barking.
Are Dachshunds high or low maintenance?
They are moderate maintenance dogs. Smooth-coated Dachshunds need little grooming, while long-haired and wire-haired types need regular brushing. All require daily walks and socialisation.
