Dachshund

WEIGHT
11-32 pounds
LIFE SPAN

Information

The Dachshund, often lovingly called the “wiener dog” or “sausage dog,” originated in Germany where it was bred to hunt badgers. Its long, low-slung body and strong determination made it perfect for digging and going underground.

Despite their small size, Dachshunds are bold, independent, and often think they’re much larger than they really are. They come in two sizes — standard and miniature — and three coat types: smooth, long-haired, and wire-haired.

These dogs are deeply loyal to their families, often forming strong attachments to one person. They are playful and alert, making excellent watchdogs, though they can be vocal and stubborn without proper training.

Overview

Dachshunds are spirited, affectionate companions with a distinctive look and big personality. They’re clever, often mischievous, and love to be involved in whatever their humans are doing.

While they make excellent apartment dogs due to their small size, they do need daily activity and mental stimulation. Their strong prey drive may lead to chasing small animals or digging in the yard.

Because of their unique body shape, it's important to avoid activities that strain their spine — such as jumping off furniture or climbing lots of stairs. With care and proper training, Dachshunds are loyal, funny, and loving pets.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Main concern is IVDD (intervertebral disc disease), which affects the spine. Also watch for dental issues, obesity, and patellar luxation. Keep them lean and avoid rough jumping.
Grooming
Smooth coat: Easy-care — brush weekly. Long-haired: Needs brushing 2–3x per week to prevent tangles. Wire-haired: Occasional hand-stripping or trimming required. All types need regular dental care and nail trims.
Exercise
Moderate needs. Daily walks and indoor play are essential. Avoid overexertion and stair-climbing to protect the back.
Training
Very smart but sometimes stubborn. Use positive reinforcement, patience, and consistency. Socialize early to prevent excessive barking or possessiveness.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality small-breed formula. Watch weight closely — extra pounds strain their spine. Split meals and avoid table scraps.
