WEIGHT
6-13 pounds
LIFE SPAN
12-15 years
Information

Affenpinschers are clever but can be stubborn, so early training with positive reinforcement is important. They enjoy puzzle toys and short training sessions, but they’ll lose interest if things get repetitive. They generally get along with other pets but may act bossy with larger dogs.

Their wiry coat needs weekly brushing and occasional trimming, especially around the face. Affens are typically healthy, but they can be prone to dental problems, patellar luxation, and respiratory issues due to their short muzzle. They’re a great fit for experienced or patient owners who appreciate a dog with humor and heart.

Overview

The Affenpinscher—often nicknamed the "monkey dog"—is a tiny breed with a huge personality. Originally bred in Germany to chase rats in kitchens and stables, these scruffy little dogs are now beloved for their quirky expressions, wiry coats, and brave attitudes. Though toy-sized, Affenpinschers have a terrier-like mindset: curious, alert, and unafraid.

They make entertaining and loyal companions who thrive on attention. Despite their independence, Affens bond closely with their humans and don’t like being left alone. Their small size and moderate energy level make them suitable for apartment living, but their alert nature means they’ll always act like your personal little watchdog.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Common issues: dental disease, luxating patella, and short-snouted breathing problems. Vet dental care is key.
Grooming
Brush weekly. Trim every 1–2 months, especially around the eyes. Hand-stripping may help maintain coat texture.
Exercise
Short walks and indoor play are usually enough. Too much activity may overwhelm this small breed.
Training
Confident and clever. Keep sessions short and fun. Can be stubborn but responds to gentle consistency.
Nutrition
Feed a quality small-breed formula. Watch weight—Affens can gain quickly despite small size.
