The Flat-Coated Retriever, also known as the Flatcoat or “Flattie,” is a cheerful, intelligent, and affectionate breed originally developed in the United Kingdom as a versatile hunting and retrieving dog. Closely related to the Golden and Labrador Retrievers, the Flatcoat stands out with its longer, more refined muzzle and beautiful, flowing coat.
These dogs are strong, energetic, and water-loving by nature — they thrive on outdoor activities and are happiest when swimming, running, or fetching. Their glossy coats, usually in solid black or liver colours, add to their elegant appearance. Known for their youthful energy, Flat-Coated Retrievers are often described as the “Peter Pan” of dog breeds, as they retain their playful, puppy-like personality well into adulthood.
Friendly, loyal, and outgoing, they are excellent family companions who love being involved in every aspect of home life. Flatcoats are intelligent and eager to please, though their enthusiasm can make them a little excitable during training. With patience, consistency, and plenty of affection, they become incredibly devoted and joyful pets.
