WEIGHT
30-55 pounds
LIFE SPAN
13-18 years
Information

Xoloitzcuintlis are intelligent and intuitive, often responding to human moods and energy. They require gentle training with positive reinforcement. Harsh discipline is not suitable for this emotionally aware breed. Socialization should start early, particularly for the hairless variety, which can be more reserved.

Hairless Xolos need regular skin care—gentle bathing, moisturizing, and sun protection are essential. Their skin can be prone to dryness or irritation. Coated Xolos have short, low-maintenance fur. Overall, they are a healthy, long-lived breed with few genetic concerns, though skin issues, missing teeth, and sensitivity to cold can occur.

Overview

The Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced show-low-eats-QUEENT-lee), also known as the Mexican Hairless Dog, is one of the oldest and rarest breeds in the world. With roots tracing back over 3,000 years to ancient Aztec civilization, this breed was considered sacred and valued as a guardian and healer. Available in both hairless and coated varieties, the Xolo comes in three sizes: toy, miniature, and standard.

Despite its exotic heritage, the Xolo is calm, quiet, and devoted at heart. These dogs form strong attachments to their families and are known for their sensitive, intelligent personalities. Naturally protective without being aggressive, the Xolo makes an excellent companion for calm households, allergy-sensitive owners, or those looking for a unique, dignified pet.
