XL Bully

HEIGHT
20-23 inches
WEIGHT
70-130 pounds
LIFE SPAN
10-13 years
Information

XL Bullies are known for being loyal, confident, and calm under control—but they require firm, experienced handling. While often excellent with children and family members, they can be protective and territorial without proper socialization.

They are intelligent and eager to learn, but best suited to owners who provide consistent leadership, structure, and boundaries. This breed is not recommended for first-time dog owners. Structured obedience classes and early social exposure are key to long-term success.

Their short coat is easy to maintain, but their muscular build and joint health need careful attention through nutrition, controlled exercise, and weight monitoring.

Note: As of 2025, the XL Bully breed is banned in Ireland. This information is intended solely for educational purposes and does not promote the sale or ownership of this breed where restricted. You can read more about the reasons behind the ban in read more about it here.

Overview

The XL Bully is the largest size variety within the American Bully breed type. While not officially recognized as a separate breed by major registries like AKC or FCI, it is fully accepted by organizations such as the ABKC (American Bully Kennel Club).

Developed in the United States during the 1990s, the XL Bully was bred to emphasize strength, stability, and a gentle, people-oriented temperament. Despite their intimidating appearance, well-bred XL Bullies are affectionate, family-loving dogs that thrive with experienced, responsible owners.

They have a short, glossy coat, a powerful physique, and a confident but composed personality. Early training and consistent structure are key to raising a well-balanced XL Bully.

While loved by many as loyal family companions, XL Bullies have also drawn controversy and legal attention due to irresponsible ownership and lack of regulation in some regions.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Watch for joint stress, dysplasia, and heart conditions common to heavy, muscular breeds. Regular vet care, appropriate weight control, and joint supplements are recommended.
Grooming
Minimal grooming needs. Weekly brushing keeps their coat healthy and helps with shedding. Clean ears and clip nails regularly.
Exercise
Needs consistent physical activity—brisk daily walks, interactive play, and moderate exercise to prevent obesity and boredom.
Training
Highly trainable with firm, experienced leadership. Early obedience, leash work, and socialization are critical to prevent territorial or reactive behaviors.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality, large-breed formula. Avoid overfeeding. Support joint health with omega-3s or glucosamine if recommended by a vet.
