Shihpoo

HEIGHT
8-15 inches
WEIGHT
8-18 pounds
LIFE SPAN
12-16 years
Information

Shihpoos thrive on attention and companionship, often forming strong bonds with one or two people. Because they inherit intelligence from the Poodle side, they are quick learners, though they can be a little stubborn like the Shih Tzu. Early training and consistent routines help establish good habits, especially for house training and social behavior.

Their coats can vary from soft waves to tighter curls, depending on genetics, but are typically low-shedding. Regular brushing and professional grooming every 6–8 weeks will keep their coat healthy and mat-free. Shihpoos are prone to dental problems, so early dental care is important. They may also inherit health issues from both parent breeds, including eye concerns and patellar luxation.

Overview

The Shihpoo is a popular hybrid breed developed by crossing a Shih Tzu with a Miniature or Toy Poodle. This combination creates a charming, small dog known for its soft, often curly coat, loving personality, and allergy-friendly traits. With the Shih Tzu’s affectionate nature and the Poodle’s intelligence, the Shihpoo makes a delightful companion for a wide range of households.

Shihpoos are highly adaptable, fitting well into apartments, city living, or quiet family homes. They bond closely with their people and love to be part of daily life—whether that means cuddling on the couch or joining in on short walks. While playful, they’re not overly demanding and can match their energy to the household they live in.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Generally healthy, but watch for tooth decay, luxating patella, and tear staining. Regular vet visits and good grooming habits are key.
Grooming
Brush several times per week. Trim every 1–2 months to prevent mats. Clean ears and eyes regularly to avoid buildup.
Exercise
Short daily walks and indoor play are usually sufficient. They’re active indoors but not overly energetic.
Training
Responsive to positive reinforcement. Start training early and keep it short and fun. Consistency helps overcome stubborn tendencies.
Nutrition
Feed a small-breed formula high in protein and low in fillers. Avoid overfeeding and monitor treats to prevent weight gain.
