WEIGHT
15-25 pounds
LIFE SPAN
12-15 years
Information

Shiba Inus are best suited for experienced dog owners who appreciate a pet with personality. Early training and socialization are essential, as they can be aloof with strangers and reactive without proper boundaries. They respond best to consistent, reward-based training, but may still choose to ignore commands when not in the mood.

One of the Shiba's standout traits is their cleanliness—they often groom themselves like cats and are naturally housebroken at a young age. Their dense double coat sheds seasonally and benefits from weekly brushing. Healthwise, they are generally sturdy, but can be prone to allergies, hip dysplasia, and patellar luxation. With the right care, the Shiba Inu is a charming, independent companion full of spirit.

Overview

The Shiba Inu is the most popular companion dog in Japan, prized for its self-assured attitude, compact body, and expressive fox-like face. Originally bred for hunting small game, this agile and intelligent breed has become a favorite among dog lovers worldwide for its independence, bold personality, and pristine grooming habits.

Though small in size, the Shiba carries itself with great dignity and confidence. They are highly intelligent but often prefer to think for themselves rather than follow commands blindly. Shibas are alert and curious, always watching their environment, which makes them excellent watchdogs. Despite their independence, they form strong bonds with their humans and enjoy being nearby—on their own terms.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Daily walks and mental stimulation are important. Shibas enjoy play but may not tolerate off-leash time due to prey drive.
