Shar Pei

HEIGHT
18-20 inches
WEIGHT
40-60 pounds
LIFE SPAN
8-12 years
Information

Shar Peis are best suited for experienced dog owners who can establish clear, calm leadership. Their strong sense of independence and suspicion of strangers requires early and ongoing socialization. They often do best in homes without multiple other pets, unless raised together, due to potential dog-on-dog aggression. That said, when bonded, Shar Peis are incredibly loyal, gentle, and affectionate with their families.

Grooming is fairly simple due to their short coat, but their wrinkles require regular cleaning and drying to prevent skin infections. Shar Peis can be prone to specific health issues like entropion (eyelid inversion), skin allergies, and a condition known as Shar Pei fever. Routine vet visits and attention to diet, hygiene, and weight management are crucial for long-term health and comfort.

Overview

The Shar Pei is one of the most visually distinct dog breeds in the world, instantly recognizable by its deep facial wrinkles, broad snout, and hippopotamus-like head. Originally developed in China as a guard dog, hunter, and farm companion, this breed is known for its independence, loyalty, and quiet dignity. Though somewhat reserved and aloof, Shar Peis are extremely devoted to their families and form strong bonds with their people.

These dogs are naturally protective and alert, making them excellent watchdogs. They typically do not bark unnecessarily and prefer to observe before reacting. Shar Peis are intelligent but also strong-willed, so early socialization and structured, positive training are key. While they don’t require extreme amounts of exercise, daily walks and calm mental stimulation are important to keep them balanced and content.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Shar Peis can be prone to skin infections, eye conditions, and Shar Pei fever, a hereditary inflammatory disease. Early diagnosis and preventive care are key.
Grooming
Their coat is easy to maintain, but wrinkles must be cleaned and dried regularly. Bathe only as needed using mild products to avoid skin irritation.
Exercise
Needs moderate daily activity like short walks or yard play. Avoid overheating in warm weather due to thick skin folds and low heat tolerance.
Training
Smart but independent. Needs a confident, patient trainer using positive reinforcement. Early socialization is essential to prevent reactivity.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality, hypoallergenic diet if skin issues arise. Monitor for food sensitivities and avoid overfeeding to prevent excess skin fold development.
