Schnauzer

HEIGHT
12-28 inches
WEIGHT
12-85 pounds
LIFE SPAN
12-15 years
Information

Each size of Schnauzer offers something a little different:

  • Miniature: Ideal for smaller homes and more manageable for novice owners. Still very lively and vocal.

  • Standard: Balanced in size and temperament. Originally used for guarding and herding.

  • Giant: Protective, imposing, and requires confident handling. Best suited for experienced, active households.

All Schnauzers share a wiry coat that requires regular trimming or professional grooming. They don’t shed heavily, which makes them a good option for people with mild allergies. Schnauzers are intelligent and often excel in obedience, agility, and even scent work. However, their strong personalities require a consistent, firm, and positive training approach. Without mental and physical stimulation, they may become bored and vocal.

Overview

Schnauzers are one of the most distinctive and versatile dog breeds, easily recognized by their expressive eyebrows and bristly beards. Developed in Germany, they come in Miniature, Standard, and Giant varieties—each with its own strengths, but all sharing the same loyal, smart, and energetic character. They were originally bred as farm dogs and ratters, but today they shine equally as family pets, watchdogs, and sport partners.

This breed thrives on activity and engagement. Schnauzers are known for being alert and protective, making them excellent watchdogs. They form strong bonds with their families and are particularly good with children when well-socialized. Their confident, slightly stubborn nature means they benefit from early, consistent training. Schnauzers are rarely lazy—they enjoy tasks, games, and being part of the action.
