Samoyed

HEIGHT
19-24 inches
WEIGHT
35-65 pounds
LIFE SPAN
12-14 years
Information

This breed needs plenty of attention, both emotionally and physically. They are not suited to being left in a yard or isolated from family life. Samoyeds love being part of the action and can be quite chatty if they feel neglected or bored. While not aggressive, they will often "talk" to express their needs or excitement.

Grooming is a major commitment with this breed. Their thick, fluffy coat sheds heavily—especially during seasonal changes—and must be brushed multiple times per week to avoid matting and maintain health. Their coat repels dirt and moisture surprisingly well, but it still requires care to keep it clean and tangle-free. Despite their appearance, Samoyeds are very clean dogs and rarely have a strong odor.

Overview

The Samoyed is a stunning, snow-white working breed developed by the Samoyede people of Siberia. Originally used for herding reindeer, pulling sleds, and sleeping alongside humans for warmth, this breed is incredibly well-adapted to cold climates and family life. Their thick double coat, upturned mouth corners (the "Samoyed smile"), and warm personality make them one of the most recognizable and beloved dog breeds.

Samoyeds are gentle and affectionate dogs that thrive on human companionship. They do best in active households and are known for their friendliness with children and other pets. While they are highly social, they can become vocal or destructive if left alone too long. Their intelligence and enthusiasm make them great participants in obedience, agility, and even therapy work, provided they are engaged and exercised regularly.

Bright but occasionally stubborn. Use positive reinforcement and variety to keep them engaged. Can be vocal if under-stimulated.
