WEIGHT

LIFE SPAN

Information

Originally bred to assist fishermen along the coast of Portugal, the Portuguese Water Dog (often called PWD or Portie) is a medium-sized, curly-coated breed with webbed feet and a deep love for water. Historically used to herd fish, retrieve nets, and act as a courier between ships, they’re strong swimmers and natural workers.

Today, they make outstanding companions for active families, especially those who enjoy outdoor activities or live near water. Porties are known for their intelligence, athleticism, and affectionate nature. They are also considered hypoallergenic due to their low-shedding, curly coat.

The breed is highly trainable and thrives on mental stimulation. They are great with children and love being part of a pack — making them ideal for social and involved households.

Overview

Portuguese Water Dogs are outgoing, bright, and full of stamina. They need lots of daily activity and attention, so they’re not the right match for sedentary homes. Their work ethic and eagerness to learn make them excellent in obedience, agility, and water-based sports.

Their non-shedding coat makes them a favorite for allergy-prone owners, but grooming is essential to prevent matting. Regular brushing and trimming every 6–8 weeks keeps their coat manageable.

Porties bond closely with their families and may experience separation anxiety if left alone too often. They do best with owners who can include them in daily life, mentally challenge them, and offer plenty of exercise.
