WEIGHT
13-17 pounds
LIFE SPAN
13-15 years
Information

The Parson Russell Terrier is a bold and energetic working terrier originally bred in England by Reverend John “Jack” Russell to hunt foxes. Though often confused with the shorter-legged Jack Russell Terrier, the Parson Russell is taller and more squarely built, bred specifically for working in the field.

This breed is known for its feisty personality, strong prey drive, and endless stamina. Parson Russells are smart, athletic, and fearless, making them ideal for active households that enjoy outdoor activities or dog sports.

They’re extremely loyal and love being involved in everything their family does, but they need consistent training and mental stimulation. Without it, they can become bored and destructive. Not ideal for a sedentary lifestyle, but perfect for people who love movement, challenge, and companionship.

Overview

Parson Russell Terriers are true terriers – fast, clever, and always on alert. They excel in agility, obedience, flyball, and even scent work. Their high drive and intensity mean they need experienced or active owners who can give them structure, stimulation, and purpose.

They’re affectionate and loyal but not couch potatoes – this is a dog that wants to run, dig, chase, and think. They do well with older children and active families, but they’re not usually recommended for homes with small pets due to prey drive.

If you're looking for a smart, high-energy dog with a huge personality in a small frame, the Parson Russell might be your perfect match.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Generally healthy, but may be prone to lens luxation, deafness, patellar luxation, and hip issues. Choose breeders who test for genetic conditions.
Grooming
Low to moderate. Weekly brushing is enough for smooth coats; broken or rough coats need occasional stripping or trimming. Bathe as needed.
Exercise
High. Needs vigorous daily activity, off-leash play in secure areas, and mental challenges. Without stimulation, may develop nuisance behaviors.
Training
Very intelligent but can be willful. Start early with firm, positive methods. They thrive when they have a job or sport to focus on.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality small-breed formula with balanced protein and fat. Monitor weight, especially if activity levels drop.
