Maltipoo

HEIGHT

WEIGHT
5-20 pounds
LIFE SPAN
12-16 years
Information

The Maltipoo is a cross between the Maltese and either a Toy or Miniature Poodle. Bred to be a low-shedding, allergy-friendly companion, this designer breed has quickly become one of the most popular small hybrid dogs around.

Maltipoos are known for their charming personality, intelligence, and soft, wavy or curly coat. They thrive on human interaction, forming strong bonds with their families. They’re playful, cuddly, and well-suited to both individuals and families — especially those living in apartments or smaller homes.

Their coat type varies from soft waves to tight curls and requires regular maintenance. Because they’re highly social, Maltipoos don’t do well when left alone for long periods, and may develop separation anxiety if not properly trained.

Overview

Maltipoos are happy little companions that bring energy, affection, and a bit of fluff into any home. They are gentle and social, making them excellent choices for seniors, singles, and families with older children.

Because they are smart and emotionally sensitive, they respond extremely well to positive reinforcement training — but harsh tones can make them anxious. Their friendly nature makes them poor guard dogs, but excellent therapy dogs or lap warmers.

With their compact size and people-oriented personalities, Maltipoos fit beautifully into urban lifestyles — just be ready for regular coat care and lots of snuggles.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Common issues include dental disease, patellar luxation, tear staining, skin allergies, and white shaker syndrome. Regular dental care and vet visits are essential.
Grooming
Brush 3–4 times a week (or daily for curlier coats). Regular trims every 6–8 weeks. Clean eyes and ears. Tear staining is common and manageable with care.
Exercise
Moderate. Daily walks, indoor play, and interactive toys keep them happy. Avoid excessive exercise in hot weather due to small size.
Training
Smart, eager, and responsive. Early socialization and training help prevent clinginess or yappiness. Reward-based methods work best.
Nutrition
Feed a small-breed formula rich in nutrients for skin, coat, and dental health. Measure meals carefully to avoid weight gain.
