WEIGHT

LIFE SPAN

Information

The Lhasa Apso is an ancient breed from Tibet, originally bred to guard Buddhist temples and monasteries. Despite its small size, this dog is alert, independent, and courageous, with a surprising amount of dignity and presence.

Lhasa Apsos are known for their long, dense, floor-length coat, which requires consistent grooming but gives them a distinctly elegant look. They are devoted to their families, often forming a deep bond with one or two people. Though affectionate with those they know, they can be reserved or aloof with strangers, making them excellent watchdogs.

They are intelligent but independent, which can make training a test of patience. However, with consistency and gentle methods, they respond well and enjoy routine and structure.

Overview

The Lhasa Apso may be small and fluffy, but it comes with a big personality and a watchful nature. Once protectors of sacred spaces, they now guard their homes with the same seriousness — alert but not aggressive.

They do best with owners who appreciate their independence, can commit to coat care, and understand they’re not lapdogs by default. While affectionate, they are not clingy, and they enjoy having their own space.

Perfect for apartments or calm homes, Lhasa Apsos combine dignity, devotion, and a touch of stubborn charm.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Watch for eye problems (progressive retinal atrophy, dry eye), skin allergies, hip dysplasia, and kidney disease in some lines. Regular vet visits help manage risks.
Grooming
Very high. Daily brushing needed for full coat. Many owners opt for a puppy clip for easier maintenance. Clean eyes and ears regularly. Professional grooming every 4–6 weeks is common.
Exercise
Low to moderate. Enjoys daily walks and indoor play. Not a high-energy breed but can be surprisingly playful when the mood strikes.
Training
Smart but independent. Needs firm but gentle training and early socialization. May take longer to house-train. Responds well to positive reinforcement and routine.
Nutrition
Feed a small-breed formula with focus on skin and coat health. Monitor for weight gain and dental hygiene due to small mouth and tight teeth.
