Information

The Leonberger is a giant working breed developed in 19th-century Germany to resemble a lion in appearance and presence. Bred as a companion for royalty and a working farm dog, the Leonberger is an impressive mix of strength, grace, and gentleness.

Despite their size, Leonbergers are calm, affectionate, and eager to please. They are excellent with children and tend to be patient and protective without being aggressive. Their massive, double coat and majestic mane give them a regal look, while their loving nature makes them beloved family dogs.

This breed needs space to move and benefits from daily exercise and mental stimulation, but they are not hyperactive. They're also excellent swimmers and often love water.

Overview

Leonbergers are true gentle giants — powerful yet soft-hearted. Their deep loyalty, patience with children, and calm temperament make them ideal for experienced dog owners with space and time to dedicate to their care.

While they are friendly and social, Leonbergers also have a natural guardian instinct, meaning they’re alert without being overly suspicious or aggressive. Early training and socialization are key to help them grow into balanced companions.

Due to their size, health care and upkeep are more demanding — but for many, the love and loyalty of a Leonberger is well worth it.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Monitor for hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, osteosarcoma, and heart disease (like DCM). Giant breeds age faster, so routine checkups and joint support are essential.
Grooming
High-maintenance. Brush 2–3 times per week, daily during shedding seasons. Keep ears clean and trim nails. Bathing can be occasional but thorough due to their size and coat.
Exercise
Needs daily walks and room to move. Not hyper but enjoys swimming, hiking, or pulling carts. Avoid over-exercising during growth.
Training
Highly trainable, eager to please, and responsive. Needs early training due to size. Positive reinforcement works best; harshness can make them shut down.
Nutrition
Feed a large or giant breed-specific formula. Monitor weight, use slow feeders to reduce bloat risk, and consider joint-supportive supplements.
