WEIGHT

LIFE SPAN

Information

Lakeland Terriers are clever, independent, and full of energy. They thrive with regular training, mental stimulation, and outlets for their natural prey drive. Though smaller than many terriers, they retain that classic feisty temperament and are surprisingly fearless.

This breed tends to get along well with respectful children and can live with other dogs, but small pets may trigger chasing instincts. Early socialization and consistent boundaries are essential.

The wiry coat requires hand-stripping or regular grooming to maintain texture and cleanliness, but it sheds very little, making it appealing for tidy homes.

Overview

The Lakeland Terrier hails from the Lake District of England, where it was bred to hunt foxes and protect sheep in tough, rocky terrain. A true working terrier, this small but sturdy breed combines intelligence, agility, and determination with a friendly, upbeat personality.

Standing just under 15 inches tall, the Lakeland sports a dense, wiry coat that’s low-shedding and comes in a range of colors including black, tan, wheaten, and grizzle. Its rectangular body, keen expression, and lively demeanor make it unmistakably terrier—full of charm, mischief, and courage.

Highly affectionate with its family and bold in character, the Lakeland is a wonderful companion for those who want a small, trainable dog with a big personality.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Generally healthy, but may be prone to inherited conditions like Legg-Calvé-Perthes, eye problems, and skin sensitivities. Work with a breeder who tests breeding stock. Maintain regular vet care.
Grooming
Requires brushing a few times per week and hand-stripping every few months to maintain coat texture. Professional grooming recommended. Clean ears and trim nails regularly.
Exercise
Needs daily walks and mental stimulation. Enjoys games, digging, and activities like earthdog trials or agility. Without enough activity, may become vocal or mischievous.
Training
Smart and independent. Responds well to positive reinforcement and consistency. Early socialization prevents excessive stubbornness or wariness toward strangers and dogs.
Nutrition
Feed a balanced, high-quality diet for small to medium active breeds. Monitor portions to maintain optimal weight. Treats should be given in moderation.
