Information

The Labradoodle is a designer dog breed resulting from the cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle (Miniature or Standard). Originally bred as a hypoallergenic guide dog, this hybrid has since gained massive popularity for its friendly temperament, low-shedding coat, and family-friendly nature.

These dogs are affectionate, highly intelligent, and eager to please. They typically do well in homes with children, other pets, and even novice owners — as long as they get the physical and mental stimulation they crave. Labradoodles often inherit the Poodle’s curly or wavy coat and the Labrador’s easy-going, social personality.

Their coat types vary from wooly (tight curls) to fleece (wavy) or hair (straighter, more shedding), each with different grooming needs.

Overview

Labradoodles are joyful, people-oriented dogs who love being involved in family life. They’re active, smart, and excel at learning tricks, agility, therapy work, and more. Their gentle nature and low-shedding potential make them popular among allergy-sensitive households — although no dog is truly hypoallergenic.

They thrive on attention and interaction, so they don’t enjoy being left alone for long periods. Boredom can lead to barking, digging, or chewing. With proper training, they’re eager learners and love pleasing their humans.

Labradoodles come in Standard, Medium, and Miniature sizes, depending on the Poodle parent, so size can vary considerably.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Be aware of hip/elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), allergies, bloat, and ear infections (especially with floppy ears). Choose a reputable breeder who tests both parent breeds.
Grooming
Brush 2–3 times per week (more for curly coats). Professional grooming every 6–8 weeks is common. Clean ears regularly and trim nails.
Exercise
High. Needs 1–2 hours of exercise daily. Enjoys walks, fetch, swimming, and mentally stimulating games. Great for active families or individuals.
Training
Very intelligent and eager to please. Learns quickly with positive reinforcement. Socialize early to shape a calm, confident adult dog.
Nutrition
Feed a balanced large-breed diet for Standards, and small/medium formulas for smaller sizes. Support coat and joint health with omega-3s and glucosamine.
