Information

The Kerry Blue Terrier (originally from County Kerry, Ireland) is a bold, intelligent, and distinctive terrier known for its unique wavy, blue-gray coat and confident personality. Originally bred for hunting, herding, and guarding, the Kerry is a true all-purpose farm dog turned companion.

They are highly alert, determined, and affectionate, forming strong bonds with their families. Though they are excellent watchdogs and can be wary of strangers or dominant toward other dogs, they’re very loyal and playful with loved ones.

Kerrys are active, athletic, and clever, thriving in homes that offer both physical exercise and mental stimulation. Their coat doesn’t shed much, but requires regular grooming to stay healthy and tangle-free.

Kerry Blue Terriers are stylish yet tough, combining the brains of a working dog with the charisma of a show dog. Their striking blue-toned coat and bearded face make them stand out in a crowd, while their bold, terrier nature gives them confidence and spunk.

They are excellent for active owners who want a trainable and affectionate companion with a little attitude. While they may not always love other dogs, they thrive when socialized early and consistently trained.

Best in homes that enjoy outdoor adventures, sports, or regular play — Kerrys are not couch potatoes, and they’ll let you know when they’re bored!

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Generally robust. Monitor for hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), dry eye, and skin allergies. Routine vet visits and exercise are key to longevity.
Grooming
High-maintenance coat. Requires brushing 2–3 times per week and professional trimming every 6–8 weeks. Clean ears, trim nails, and keep beard clean after meals.
Exercise
High. Needs at least 1 hour of daily exercise — walks, play, training games. Loves to chase, dig, and explore. Mental stimulation helps reduce destructive behaviors.
Training
Very intelligent but independent and strong-willed. Early, firm, and positive training works best. Socialization is key to prevent reactivity or dominance issues.
Nutrition
Feed a balanced, medium-breed formula rich in protein. Maintain a healthy weight and support skin/coat health with omega-3s.
