Jackapoo

HEIGHT
10-16 inches
WEIGHT
13-25 pounds
LIFE SPAN
12-15 years
Information

The Jackapoo is a cross between a Jack Russell Terrier and a Poodle (usually Miniature or Toy), resulting in a small-to-medium companion dog with a fun, alert personality. This hybrid often inherits the Poodle’s intelligence and low-shedding coat, mixed with the Jack Russell’s energetic, brave nature.

Jackapoos are typically outgoing, loyal, and full of personality. They’re clever and quick to learn but can also be cheeky or mischievous — especially if under-stimulated. They love playtime, problem-solving games, and being involved in the action.

While friendly and affectionate with families, they can be wary of strangers and benefit from early socialization. Their grooming and energy needs will vary based on coat type and which parent they take after more.

Overview

Jackapoos are ideal for those who want a clever, compact, and active dog that loves learning and being involved in daily life. They do well in homes where they get plenty of attention, stimulation, and structure.

Depending on the mix, some Jackapoos have the hypoallergenic coat of the Poodle, while others shed a bit more like the Jack Russell. Regardless of coat, they’re social, fun-loving companions who crave connection and thrive with training.

Not ideal for low-activity households or people gone most of the day — they can get vocal or destructive if bored.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Watch for patellar luxation, dental issues, eye problems (PRA), hip dysplasia, and epilepsy. Regular vet care and dental hygiene are crucial.
Grooming
Brush 2–3 times per week. If coat is curlier, consider professional grooming every 6–8 weeks. Clean ears, trim nails, and brush teeth regularly.
Exercise
High. Needs 60–90 minutes daily — walks, fetch, agility, or interactive play. They love mental games and thrive on new challenges.
Training
Very intelligent and trainable. Responds well to reward-based methods. Start early to manage Jack Russell stubbornness and establish good manners.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality small-breed formula suited to energy levels. Monitor weight and portion control to avoid joint strain or obesity.
