Information

The Italian Greyhound, or "Iggy", is the smallest of the sighthound family. Originally bred as a companion and lapdog for nobles in Ancient Rome and Renaissance Italy, this breed combines refined grace with playful energy and deep emotional connection.

Though they resemble miniature Greyhounds, Italian Greyhounds have their own distinct personalities — sensitive, loyal, and often a bit mischievous. They adore their humans and will follow them everywhere. Despite their fragile look, they are athletic and love to sprint, though they’re equally happy snuggling under blankets for hours.

These dogs do best in quiet households and require gentle handling, making them ideal for adults or older children. They do not tolerate cold well and thrive in indoor environments with lots of love and cozy corners.

Overview

Italian Greyhounds are elegant lapdogs with surprising bursts of zoomies. They're deeply bonded to their people and love affection — sometimes to the point of clinginess. They’re happiest when curled up next to you, under a blanket, or sunbathing in a quiet spot.

While they’re playful and agile, they’re also physically fragile, especially when young. They don’t handle cold or roughhousing well and need gentle environments with consistent routines.

Because they’re prone to separation anxiety, Iggies do best in homes where someone is around most of the time. Their quiet, graceful nature makes them well-suited for apartment living — as long as they get daily play and companionship.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Watch for dental disease, fractures (especially legs), separation anxiety, seizures, and skin allergies. Use harnesses (not collars) to protect their neck and spine. Regular vet visits are a must.
Grooming
Extremely low-maintenance. Occasional wipe-downs or baths keep them clean. Trim nails regularly. Keep them warm with sweaters in colder seasons.
Exercise
Moderate. Short walks and indoor zoomie sessions are usually enough. They love to sprint in short bursts but tire quickly. Always supervise off-leash in safe areas.
Training
Highly sensitive. Respond best to gentle, patient, positive reinforcement. Harsh correction can cause anxiety. Socialization is key to prevent shyness or fearfulness.
Nutrition
Feed a small-breed formula appropriate to their size and activity level. Maintain a lean body condition to reduce joint stress. Consider dental-supportive diets or chews.
