Irish Wolfhound

HEIGHT
30-35 inches
WEIGHT
105-180 pounds
LIFE SPAN
6-10 years
Information

The Irish Wolfhound is one of the oldest and tallest dog breeds in the world, originally bred in Ireland to hunt wolves and large game. Despite their imposing size, Irish Wolfhounds are famously gentle, quiet, and affectionate, making them perfect companions for those who appreciate both majesty and softness.

These dogs stand out with their shaggy, wiry coat, elongated limbs, and noble expression. They are loyal, intelligent, and usually good with children and other pets. While they do need room to move, they are not particularly high-energy — they enjoy walks and relaxed companionship more than intense exercise.

Due to their size, Irish Wolfhounds require special care for joints, heart health, and nutrition. They also have a shorter lifespan, which can be emotionally challenging for owners.

Overview

The Irish Wolfhound may look like a medieval warrior’s sidekick (and once was!), but in reality, they are calm, affectionate couch lovers. They’re loyal and emotionally intuitive, often called “gentle giants” for their soft personalities and graceful presence.

They bond deeply with their humans and are not suited for long hours alone. While they’re generally peaceful and quiet indoors, they do need space to stretch and gentle outdoor exercise. Their size means that everything — from food to vet bills to car space — is bigger, so prospective owners should be prepared.

Despite their short lifespan, these dogs leave a big impression — they’re dignified, loyal, and loving to the core.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Common concerns include dilated cardiomyopathy, osteosarcoma (bone cancer), bloat (GDV), and joint issues. Avoid overexertion during growth stages and maintain routine vet care.
Grooming
Moderate grooming. Brush weekly to prevent matting and remove dead hair. Hand-stripping once or twice a year is ideal. Clean ears and trim nails regularly.
Exercise
Moderate. Needs 30–60 minutes of relaxed walking daily. Avoid high-impact activity, especially when young. Access to a safe area to stretch is important.
Training
Smart, sensitive, and eager to please. Use gentle, positive reinforcement. Early socialization is important due to their size. Usually not stubborn or reactive.
Nutrition
Feed a giant-breed formula, especially during growth. Watch weight to protect joints. Split meals to reduce bloat risk. Include joint-supportive nutrients.
