The Irish Water Spaniel is the tallest of all spaniels and among the oldest spaniel breeds. Developed in Ireland for waterfowl retrieval, this breed is instantly recognizable by its tight, curly liver-colored coat and signature "rat tail" (smooth at the base, tapered, and hairless at the tip).
They are prized for their intelligence, athleticism, and playful charm. Irish Water Spaniels are high-energy, devoted, and can be both independent and goofy — often referred to as the “clown of the spaniel family.”
This breed thrives in active homes, especially those who enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, or dog sports. They need both physical and mental stimulation to remain happy and well-behaved.
