Havanese

HEIGHT

WEIGHT
7-13 pounds
LIFE SPAN
13-15 years
Information

The Havanese is bright and quick to learn, responding well to gentle, positive reinforcement. It enjoys training sessions and picks up tricks and basic commands quickly. Because it bonds so closely with its humans, it’s an ideal choice for therapy work or as a first-time dog.

Social, but not yappy, the Havanese is friendly with strangers, other pets, and children when well-socialized. Their coat, while beautiful, requires regular grooming unless clipped short. They shed very little, making them a popular option for allergy-sensitive homes.

Regular mental stimulation is important—this clever little dog gets bored easily if not engaged.

Overview

The Havanese is the national dog of Cuba and a member of the Bichon family. Originally bred as a companion for wealthy Cuban families, this breed has remained true to its purpose—being a loyal, affectionate, and fun-loving family dog.

With a soft expression, expressive eyes, and a long, flowing coat, the Havanese charms everyone it meets. It’s intelligent, eager to please, and adaptable—making it well-suited for both city life and suburban homes. Despite its small size, this breed is surprisingly sturdy, playful, and alert.

Havanese dogs form strong bonds with their people and are known for their clownish, happy nature. They thrive on companionship and dislike being left alone for long periods.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Generally healthy but may be prone to luxating patella, eye issues, and congenital deafness. Regular vet checkups and early screening help ensure long-term well-being.
Grooming
Daily brushing is ideal for long coats to prevent mats. Many owners opt to keep the coat trimmed short for easier upkeep. Clean ears, trim nails, and brush teeth regularly.
Exercise
Short walks and indoor play keep this breed happy. While not overly energetic, the Havanese enjoys activity and thrives with interactive games and attention.
Training
Highly trainable and eager to please. Responds best to positive methods. Early socialization builds confidence and prevents separation anxiety or excessive attachment.
Nutrition
Feed a balanced, high-quality diet for small breeds. Monitor treats and portions to avoid weight gain. Fresh water and dental chews support overall health.
