WEIGHT
45-70 pounds
LIFE SPAN
10-14 years
Information

The German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) was developed in 19th-century Germany to be a highly adaptable hunting dog — capable of tracking, pointing, and retrieving on land and in water. The result is a smart, athletic, and eager-to-please breed that thrives in active households.

GSPs are medium to large dogs with lean, muscular bodies and short, sleek coats. They’re known for being enthusiastic, friendly, and loving toward their families, including children. They need lots of physical exercise and mental stimulation every single day to remain happy and well-behaved.

Their high energy, intelligence, and strong prey drive make them exceptional working or sport dogs — but without structure, they can become bored and destructive. They're best suited for experienced or highly active owners.

Overview

German Shorthaired Pointers are built for endurance, speed, and versatility. They excel in hunting, agility, running, and any kind of outdoor adventure. While they are affectionate and form strong bonds with their people, they need a job to do — whether it’s retrieving, hiking, or solving puzzle toys.

GSPs are not couch potatoes. Without enough exercise and attention, they can develop anxiety or destructive behaviors. But when their energy is channeled properly, they’re one of the most joyful, trainable, and loyal companions out there.

With proper training and socialization, they are friendly with people and other pets, though their hunting instincts may kick in around small animals.

What to expect

Training
Highly trainable and intelligent. Thrives on positive reinforcement and structure. Early obedience training and socialization are essential. Great for advanced tasks and dog sports.
Nutrition
Feed a high-protein, performance-oriented diet. Divide meals to help prevent bloat. Maintain lean muscle and support joint and heart health.
