Information

The French Spaniel is a cooperative, intelligent dog that responds well to positive, consistent training. It’s eager to please but retains a touch of independence, especially when focused on scent or field tasks.

Socialization from an early age ensures confidence in varied settings, and obedience training should begin young to build good habits. This breed thrives when included in everyday life and given mental stimulation—whether through hunting, dog sports, or interactive play.

Its medium-length coat requires moderate grooming and sheds seasonally. While overall a healthy and hardy breed, careful attention should be paid to ear cleanliness and hip health.

Overview

The French Spaniel is one of the oldest continental pointing breeds, originating in France and prized for its elegant style, athleticism, and dependable nature. Though less known than other spaniels, it’s well-regarded by hunters for its steady tracking ability, soft mouth, and willingness to work in various terrain.

Medium to large in size, this breed has a graceful appearance with feathered ears, a silky coat, and expressive eyes. Beyond hunting, the French Spaniel excels as a family companion—calm indoors, affectionate with its people, and tolerant with children and other dogs.

Balanced and thoughtful, the French Spaniel is not overly excitable like some gundogs and adapts well to both active outdoor lifestyles and quieter family routines.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Generally healthy, though some individuals may be prone to hip dysplasia and eye conditions like entropion. Regular hip evaluations and eye exams are advised. Keep ears clean to prevent infections due to feathering and activity outdoors.
Grooming
Brush weekly to maintain coat health and reduce shedding. Pay attention to feathered areas and behind the ears. Bathe as needed. Trim nails monthly and check teeth and ears regularly.
Exercise
This breed benefits from daily walks, playtime, and regular opportunities to explore. While not hyperactive, the French Spaniel needs physical and mental stimulation to stay content—especially if not working in the field.
Training
Intelligent and eager to work, this spaniel learns quickly when training is positive and engaging. Early socialization helps it stay calm and friendly in various environments. Works best with a calm, patient handler.
Nutrition
Provide a high-quality diet suitable for active medium-to-large breeds. Adjust portions to match energy output. Joint support may be beneficial as the dog ages.
