Field Spaniel

HEIGHT
17-18 inches
WEIGHT
35-50 pounds
LIFE SPAN
12-13 years
Information

Field Spaniels are affectionate, intelligent, and eager to please, making them excellent companions and trainable family dogs. While they bond closely with their humans, they aren’t clingy and tend to be more emotionally balanced than some other spaniels.

Early socialization is important to prevent shyness, and positive training methods work best. They are sensitive by nature and can become withdrawn if treated harshly.

Their medium-length coat requires regular brushing to avoid tangles, particularly around the ears, chest, and tail. They are generally healthy but may be prone to some spaniel-related conditions, including ear infections and hip dysplasia.

Overview

The Field Spaniel was originally bred in 19th-century England as a versatile hunting and companion dog, designed to work both in the field and at home. Though less known than its Cocker or Springer cousins, the Field Spaniel stands out for its dignified temperament, silky coat, and loyal disposition.

Slightly longer than tall, with a flowing coat and soulful eyes, this spaniel is graceful in both appearance and movement. It thrives in active families who appreciate a quiet, people-oriented dog that enjoys moderate activity and deep companionship.

Unlike more excitable spaniel breeds, the Field Spaniel is often calmer and more reserved—especially indoors. That said, it retains the characteristic spaniel enthusiasm when outdoors or engaged in scent work or play.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Field Spaniels are generally robust, but responsible breeders screen for hip dysplasia, eye issues, and thyroid function. Regular vet visits, a healthy diet, and joint-friendly exercise can promote long-term wellness.
Grooming
Brush the coat at least twice a week, especially around feathered areas. Regularly clean ears to prevent infections, and trim nails monthly. Occasional bathing helps keep the silky coat fresh.
Exercise
Needs daily moderate activity: walks, play sessions, or gentle off-leash time. Enjoys scent games and thrives on variety without being overly demanding.
Training
Very trainable and eager to please. Responds best to kind, consistent training. Early exposure to people and situations builds confidence and prevents aloofness.
Nutrition
Feed a balanced diet tailored for medium sporting breeds. Monitor weight to avoid pressure on joints, and consider joint-supporting supplements if recommended by a vet.
