Estrela Mountain Dog

HEIGHT
24-29 inches
WEIGHT
77-132 pounds
LIFE SPAN
10-14 years
Information

Estrelas are intelligent and observant but also proud and independent. They require confident, consistent leadership from an owner who understands working breeds. Socialization from an early age helps reduce suspicion toward strangers and ensures stable behavior.

Their double coat comes in both short and long forms and protects them in all weather conditions. Grooming needs vary, but all Estrelas benefit from regular brushing, especially during seasonal shedding.

Estrelas typically form strong bonds with one or two primary people and may be less social than typical companion breeds. They’re calm indoors but naturally territorial outdoors.

Overview

The Estrela Mountain Dog, one of Portugal’s oldest native breeds, was developed to protect livestock in the rugged Estrela Mountains. Built for endurance and bravery, this breed is alert, confident, and deeply loyal to its people. Estrelas were bred to think independently, often working far from humans, which gives them strong instincts and a calm yet determined nature.

Though reserved with strangers, Estrelas are affectionate, even gentle, with their family. They don’t seek constant attention, but they enjoy close companionship and will quietly stay nearby. Their strong protective drive makes them excellent property guardians, especially in rural or spacious homes where their independence and vigilance shine.

This breed is not suited for urban apartments or first-time dog owners—but for those who appreciate its loyalty, stability, and natural watchdog ability, the Estrela offers deep and lasting companionship.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
The Estrela is generally a hardy breed, but it’s important to monitor for hip dysplasia and bloat—two concerns in large, deep-chested dogs. Routine vet checks, proper weight control, and avoiding exercise right after meals can reduce risk. Due to their protective nature, early behavioral shaping is essential.
Grooming
The dense coat (especially long-coated types) needs brushing 2–3 times per week to prevent matting and reduce shedding. During seasonal changes, daily brushing may be required. Ears should be checked regularly, and nails kept short, especially for inactive dogs.
Exercise
Estrelas are not high-energy but do need daily walks and mental stimulation. A large, enclosed yard is ideal for patrolling and stretching their legs. They enjoy having a purpose—whether it’s guarding, patrolling property, or simply shadowing their human.
Training
Training must be firm, respectful, and consistent. Estrelas do not respond well to harsh correction or repetitive drills. Instead, they thrive when given clear expectations, calm leadership, and tasks that align with their natural role as protectors.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality diet for large working breeds. Split meals into two portions per day to lower the risk of bloat. Monitor weight carefully and avoid free feeding.
