Information

The English Setter is one of the oldest gundog breeds, developed in England more than 400 years ago to locate and “set” game birds. Known for their silky, feathered coats and speckled coloring (called belton), English Setters are as beautiful as they are affectionate.

They are gentle, friendly, and sociable — both with humans and other dogs. This makes them excellent companions for families, children, and active households. While they have plenty of energy outdoors, indoors they are calm and well-mannered.

English Setters are intelligent and eager to please, but also sensitive. Harsh training won’t work; they respond best to positive reinforcement and routine. Though bred for the field, they adapt wonderfully to active family life when their mental and physical needs are met.

Overview

English Setters are calm, loving dogs who thrive in environments where they can stretch their legs and enjoy companionship. They’re especially known for their good nature — polite, sweet with children, and generally sociable with other animals.

They do best with regular outdoor time and mental enrichment. Though athletic, they’re not hyper, and they settle well indoors after activity. Their affectionate and even-tempered nature makes them great therapy dogs and loyal companions.

However, their long coat and floppy ears require grooming, and their gentle personalities do not handle neglect or isolation well. They want to be with you — running, cuddling, or simply watching the world go by.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Watch for hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, deafness (especially in puppies), and bloat. Regular screenings and proper care help maintain health and longevity.
Grooming
Brush several times per week to prevent mats, especially around feathering (ears, tail, legs). Trim excess hair regularly and check ears for debris or moisture to prevent infections.
Exercise
Moderate to high. Needs at least 60 minutes of daily activity — walks, fetch, sniffing games, or even bird work. Loves running and outdoor adventures.
Training
Very smart and eager to please, but can be sensitive. Use positive reinforcement and keep training gentle, fun, and consistent. Early socialization helps shape a confident, well-rounded dog.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality, balanced formula for medium-to-large active breeds. Watch weight and support joint and coat health. Divide meals to lower bloat risk.
