Dutch Shepherd

HEIGHT
21-24 inches
WEIGHT
42-75 pounds
LIFE SPAN
11-14 years
Information

Dutch Shepherds are extremely intelligent and eager to work, but their high drive makes them best suited for experienced owners. Without proper training and stimulation, they may become restless or reactive. They need daily physical and mental activity and benefit from advanced training or sport work.

The breed is generally healthy, though responsible breeding is essential due to its limited gene pool. Coat care varies by type—short coats are easy to maintain, while long and rough coats require more grooming.

Overview

The Dutch Shepherd is a rare, all-purpose herding breed from the Netherlands, originally used by farmers for guarding, herding, and pulling carts. Today, it excels in police work, search and rescue, protection sports, and agility due to its incredible focus, trainability, and physical prowess.

Typically brindle in color, Dutch Shepherds come in short-, long-, and rough-coated varieties. This breed thrives in active homes with a clear routine and purpose. While affectionate and loyal with its people, the Dutch Shepherd is also an alert and confident guardian.
