HEIGHT
21-25 inches
WEIGHT
45-73 pounds
LIFE SPAN
12-15 years
Information

The Drentsche Patrijshond is intelligent, cooperative, and gentle but needs daily structure and exercise to stay balanced. It adapts well to family life and forms strong bonds with its people. Socialization is important to maintain its easygoing nature, especially with strangers or other dogs.

Its medium-length coat is fairly low-maintenance, though feathering on legs and ears needs regular brushing. The breed is generally healthy but can be prone to ear infections and hip dysplasia, so routine care and health screenings are important.

Overview

The Drentsche Patrijshond (also known as the Drent or Dutch Partridge Dog) is a rare, all-purpose hunting breed from the Netherlands. Developed in the 16th century, it was used to point, retrieve, and track game—especially partridges—in varied terrain. Today, it is prized for its combination of hunting skill and affectionate, family-oriented temperament.

Medium-sized with a strong, athletic build, feathered tail, and expressive face, the Drent is eager to work in the field and eager to cuddle at home. It’s known for being friendly with children, loyal to its family, and less intense than many other sporting breeds.
