Information

The Coton de Tulear is a small companion breed from Madagascar, where it was once known as the “Royal Dog of Madagascar.” Its name comes from its uniquely soft, cotton-like coat and the port city of Tulear.

Cotons are cheerful, affectionate, and naturally clownish — they love to entertain their people and are happiest when involved in family life. Despite their aristocratic past, they’re easygoing, playful, and adaptable to different lifestyles.

Their hypoallergenic coat is low-shedding but does require regular grooming. They’re intelligent, sociable, and tend to get along well with children, other pets, and even strangers. This breed thrives on companionship and is not suited to being left alone for long periods.

Overview

The Coton de Tulear is a joyful, devoted companion that thrives on attention and loves to follow its family everywhere. They’re playful without being hyper, intelligent without being demanding, and affectionate without being clingy — though they do prefer not to be alone.

Their white, fluffy coat is one of their signature features, requiring regular care to stay mat-free and clean. With proper grooming and gentle training, the Coton is an ideal pet for allergy-sensitive homes and anyone seeking a cheerful, cuddly friend.

Cotons are known for their “happy dance” — hopping or spinning in excitement — and for their silly, clown-like antics. Life with a Coton is full of laughs and love.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Generally robust, but some may experience hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, eye issues, or allergies. Regular vet visits and weight management are important.
Grooming
High-maintenance coat. Daily brushing is recommended to prevent tangles and matting. Bathe every 2–4 weeks. Keep ears clean and eyes tear-stain-free. Regular dental care is essential.
Exercise
Low to moderate. Short walks, playtime, and mental games are enough. Cotons are agile and enjoy indoor play or small yard time — no need for intense activity.
Training
Very trainable and eager to please. Responds well to positive reinforcement. Early socialization helps prevent shyness. They love learning tricks and routines.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality small-breed formula. Avoid overfeeding — keep lean to protect joints. Coat-supportive nutrients can help maintain healthy hair and skin.
