Bred originally as hunting and flushing dogs, modern Cockers make loving, loyal companions. They’re playful, intelligent, and affectionate with everyone — from children to seniors — making them a favorite family dog.

Overview

Cocker Spaniels are joyful, devoted companions who thrive on attention and affection. Their gentle nature makes them excellent with kids and sociable with other pets. They're happiest in homes where they are included in daily life and get plenty of attention.

Cockers have strong hunting instincts and love activities like fetch, swimming, and sniffing games. Their long, floppy ears and feathered coat require regular care to keep them healthy and beautiful.

They are emotionally sensitive and respond best to kind, consistent training. Harsh methods can cause stress or reactivity. With proper guidance, Cockers become balanced, loving family members.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Watch for ear infections (due to long ears), eye problems (like cataracts and glaucoma), hip dysplasia, and skin allergies. Regular vet visits and grooming help catch issues early.
Grooming
Brush 3–4 times per week and schedule trims every 6–8 weeks. Clean ears weekly and check eyes regularly. Daily coat checks after walks are helpful to remove debris or tangles.
Exercise
Moderate to high. Needs daily walks, playtime, and mental stimulation. Enjoys off-leash runs in secure areas and games that engage the nose and instincts.
Training
Very trainable and food-motivated. Start early with gentle, positive reinforcement. Socialize with people and other animals to reduce potential shyness or anxiety.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality, skin- and coat-supportive formula. Monitor weight — Cockers love food and can easily overeat. Regular dental care is also important.
