WEIGHT
45-60 pounds
LIFE SPAN
8-12 years
Information

The Chinese Shar-Pei is one of the world’s most visually distinctive dog breeds, instantly recognizable by its deep wrinkles, blue-black tongue, and serious expression. Originally bred in China for guarding, hunting, and farm work, the modern Shar-Pei is a devoted and independent companion.

Shar-Peis are calm, quiet, and reserved, often forming deep bonds with their families while being aloof with strangers. They are clean, relatively low-energy, and often behave more like cats than dogs in their demeanor — enjoying space, routine, and a calm environment.

Their wrinkled coat can be short and bristly (horse coat”) or softer and slightly longer (brush coat), but all require regular care to prevent skin infections.

Overview

The Shar-Pei is a quiet, thoughtful companion with a strong presence and unique appearance. Though not overly affectionate with strangers, they are deeply loyal to their humans and naturally protective, making them excellent watchdogs.

While they can be stubborn and independent, Shar-Peis respond well to calm, confident training. They’re generally clean dogs who enjoy structure and routine, and they do best in households where they’re not overwhelmed by chaos or constant activity.

Their wrinkles are adorable but require maintenance, especially in humid climates or during allergy flare-ups. With proper care, the Shar-Pei is a truly one-of-a-kind companion.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Common issues include entropion (inward-turning eyelids), skin fold infections, Shar-Pei fever, and hip dysplasia. Choose breeders who test for hereditary conditions and be ready for skin and eye care.
Grooming
Brush weekly and clean between wrinkles with a damp cloth to prevent infections. Bathe monthly and keep ears dry. Horse coat Shar-Peis shed minimally; brush coat types may shed more.
Exercise
Moderate needs. Daily walks and play are enough. They're not overly energetic but still benefit from regular mental and physical stimulation.
Training
Smart, but independent and occasionally stubborn. Needs early socialization and consistent, respectful training. They’re very clean and easy to housebreak.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality, skin-supportive formula. Some Shar-Peis benefit from limited-ingredient diets due to allergies. Maintain healthy weight to reduce joint strain.
