Chinese Crested

WEIGHT

LIFE SPAN

Information

The Chinese Crested is an eye-catching and affectionate toy breed, best known for its hairless body, soft skin, and feathery tufts of hair on the head, feet, and tail. There are actually two coat varieties: the Hairless and the Powderpuff (fully coated with a soft, silky double coat).

Despite their exotic appearance, these dogs are loving, lively, and very people-oriented. They form strong bonds with their humans and often become velcro dogs — sticking close and always ready for a cuddle. Chinese Cresteds are gentle, playful, and adaptable, thriving in both quiet and busy homes.

Though low-shedding, this breed requires careful grooming and skin care. With proper socialization and attention, they make wonderful companions with quirky charm and lots of love to give.

Overview

The Chinese Crested may look like a fashion-forward toy breed, but beneath the glam is a devoted, goofy, and loving companion. These dogs thrive on closeness, love being in laps, and hate being left alone for long periods.

They can be sensitive and timid without early socialization, so positive experiences as a puppy are key. Though small, they’re agile and enjoy interactive games, training, and lounging in the sun.

Their skin and coat require unique care — especially for the hairless variety, who need sunscreen or protection from the cold. In return, you get a conversation-starting companion with a heart twice as big as their body.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Generally healthy, but common issues include dental disease, skin irritation, patellar luxation, and some allergies. Hairless types need sun protection and warm clothing in cold climates.
Grooming
Hairless: Regular skin care (moisturizing, sun protection), weekly baths. Powderpuff: Daily brushing to avoid matting. All types need routine dental care and nail trims.
Exercise
Low to moderate. Daily walks and short play sessions indoors or outdoors are enough. They love human interaction more than intense physical activity.
Training
Very trainable, but can be shy or sensitive. Use gentle, positive reinforcement. Socialize early to prevent fear-based behaviors. Thrive with attention and consistency.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality small-breed diet. Watch weight carefully — they’re prone to getting pudgy. For hairless types, skin-supporting nutrients may help.
