Information

Originating from Mexico, the Chihuahua is the world’s smallest dog breed — but don’t let the size fool you. These little dogs are full of confidence, character, and charm. Named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua, they have ancient roots dating back to the Techichi, a small companion dog kept by the Toltec civilization.

Chihuahuas come in two coat types: smooth and long-haired. They’re lively, alert, and loyal, often forming a tight bond with one person. Their small size makes them ideal for apartment living, but they still require mental stimulation and gentle training.

Despite their petite frame, Chihuahuas often see themselves as much larger than they are — making them both courageous and surprisingly good watchdogs.

Overview

Chihuahuas are compact, quirky, and deeply loyal. They love being close to their humans and often become attached to one person in particular. These dogs are alert and bold, often acting as little “guardians” of their home despite their size.

Because of their delicate build, they’re not ideal for roughhousing or small children without supervision. They thrive in calm homes where they get attention, gentle training, and warmth — quite literally, as they hate the cold.

Whether riding in a handbag or ruling the house from a cushion, Chihuahuas bring sass, snuggles, and surprising intelligence to any home.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Chihuahuas are generally long-lived but may face health issues like dental disease, collapsed trachea, luxating patella, heart murmurs, and low blood sugar. Regular vet care and dental hygiene are crucial.
Grooming
Smooth coats need weekly brushing; long-haired types need brushing several times a week. Both require regular nail trimming, ear cleaning, and dental care.
Exercise
Low exercise needs, but they still benefit from short walks and active indoor play. Be cautious in extreme weather — Chihuahuas are sensitive to cold and heat.
Training
Smart and eager but can be stubborn or spoiled. Gentle, consistent positive reinforcement works best. Early socialization helps reduce barking and reactivity.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality toy-breed formula. Due to their small size, overfeeding can quickly lead to obesity. Provide small, frequent meals to avoid hypoglycemia.
