Chesapeake Bay Retriever

WEIGHT
55-80 pounds
LIFE SPAN
10-13 years
Information

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever (often shortened to Chessie) was developed in the United States in the 19th century to retrieve ducks in icy waters along the Chesapeake Bay. This breed is known for its endurance, toughness, and ability to work in harsh weather.

Chessies are powerful and muscular, with a distinctive oily, wavy double coat that repels water and provides insulation. Their strong retrieving instincts, loyalty, and independence set them apart from other retrievers.

Though affectionate with their families, Chessies are more reserved and protective than Golden or Labrador Retrievers. They need confident handling, early training, and plenty of activity to thrive.

Overview

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a devoted, driven breed built for hard work and cold water. While not as openly friendly as some other retrievers, Chessies form deep, loyal bonds with their people and excel in active homes, especially those with hunting or outdoor interests.

They are independent thinkers, sometimes stubborn, but also highly trainable when worked with consistently and respectfully. Chessies require both physical and mental challenges — they love swimming, retrieving, and even dog sports like tracking or agility.

This breed is best suited for experienced dog owners who can provide leadership, daily activity, and purpose.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Generally healthy but may be prone to hip/elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), bloat (gastric torsion), and degenerative joint issues. Joint and eye testing recommended.
Grooming
Low-maintenance coat. Brush weekly, but avoid overbathing, which strips protective oils. The coat is naturally water-resistant and should be left mostly natural.
Exercise
High energy. Needs 1–2 hours of activity daily — walks, swims, retrieving games, or hiking. Thrives with a job or consistent purpose-driven tasks.
Training
Very intelligent but independent. Needs early socialization and consistent training with firm, positive methods. Can be protective, so boundary-setting is essential.
Nutrition
Feed a high-protein, active-breed diet. Monitor food intake, especially if working or highly active. Consider joint support supplements in adulthood.
