WEIGHT
70-100 pounds
LIFE SPAN

Information

Calupohs are intelligent and stable but require early socialization and clear leadership. Their strong instincts mean they should be raised by experienced handlers who can provide consistent training and structure. They are not typically aggressive but may be aloof with strangers and are deeply loyal to their pack.

Their dense coat is weather-resistant and relatively easy to care for—weekly brushing is usually sufficient. The breed is generally healthy and resilient, having benefited from the hybrid vigor of wolf ancestry, though it still needs regular vet care and mental stimulation.

Overview

The Calupoh, also known as the Mexican Wolfdog, is a relatively recent breed developed in the late 20th century by intentionally crossing domestic dogs with native Mexican wolves to revive pre-Hispanic cultural heritage. Recognized in Mexico as a national breed, the Calupoh is admired for its powerful physique, graceful movement, and symbolic connection to Mesoamerican tradition.

With its tall, lean build and jet-black coat, the Calupoh closely resembles a wolf but behaves more like a loyal guardian dog. Calm, confident, and emotionally intuitive, this breed forms strong bonds with its family and is naturally protective without being aggressive.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Robust overall. Maintain regular checkups and joint health monitoring. Ensure vaccinations and parasite control, especially in rural environments.
Grooming
Brush once or twice per week to remove dead hair. The coat is self-cleaning and low-odor. Bathe occasionally as needed.
Exercise
Needs daily physical activity and mental stimulation. Long walks, secure free-running, or structured play are ideal. Avoid boredom and isolation.
Training
Smart and responsive with the right handler. Needs clear leadership, early socialization, and positive reinforcement. Not ideal for first-time dog owners.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality large-breed diet. Maintain lean weight to support joints. May benefit from supplements for coat and joint health.
