Cairn Terrier

HEIGHT
9-10 inches
WEIGHT
13-18 pounds
LIFE SPAN
13-15 years
Information

Cairn Terriers are smart, alert, and confident, but they do have a classic terrier stubborn streak. They thrive with consistent, positive training and benefit from early socialization. Their high prey drive means a fenced yard or leash is a must.

Their shaggy double coat is weather-resistant and comes in many colors (except white). It requires weekly brushing and occasional hand-stripping to maintain texture and shape. Cairns shed minimally and are often considered allergy-friendly compared to other breeds.

Overview

The Cairn Terrier is one of the oldest terrier breeds, originally bred in the Scottish Highlands to hunt foxes and other vermin among the rocky cairns that gave the breed its name. Best known for its bold spirit and scruffy charm, the Cairn is famously tough for its size.

Compact, alert, and always up for an adventure, Cairns are intelligent and independent but also form strong bonds with their families. Despite their working roots, they adapt well to modern life—as long as they get enough mental and physical stimulation.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Generally robust. Watch for joint issues and rare hereditary conditions like craniomandibular osteopathy. Routine vet visits help ensure long-term health.
Grooming
Brush weekly. Hand-strip coat a few times a year to maintain texture. Bathing should be occasional to avoid softening the coat.
Exercise
Needs daily walks and playtime. Energetic outdoors but calm inside if properly exercised. Enjoys puzzle toys and digging opportunities.
Training
Quick-witted but independent. Best trained with positive reinforcement and consistency. Early socialization prevents over-bossiness.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality small-breed diet. Monitor weight—Cairns can be food-driven and prone to gaining excess weight if under-exercised.
