WEIGHT
30-40 pounds
LIFE SPAN
12-14 years
Information

The Brittany is a medium-sized sporting breed that originated in France, developed for bird hunting with a keen nose and tireless enthusiasm. Though often called the “Brittany Spaniel,” the modern name is simply Brittany, as it is technically a pointing breed, not a flushing spaniel.

Compact, athletic, and agile, the Brittany has a dense coat with feathering on the legs and chest. Most are orange and white or liver and white. Known for being affectionate and sensitive, Brittanys are great family dogs as long as their high energy needs are met.

This breed excels in field work, agility, and obedience but requires an active lifestyle and plenty of mental stimulation. Without it, they may become restless or destructive.

They're known for forming strong bonds with their families and being especially gentle with children. Their sensitivity makes them easy to train, but also means they don’t respond well to harsh correction. Early socialization and positive reinforcement are key.

Ideal for hunters, hikers, and outdoor lovers, the Brittany is a spirited, affectionate companion with the heart of an athlete and the soul of a best friend.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Generally a healthy breed, but watch for hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and ear infections. Regular checkups and ear cleaning help prevent common issues.
Grooming
Moderate coat maintenance. Weekly brushing helps reduce shedding and prevent tangles. Trim feathering as needed and clean ears regularly.
Exercise
Very high energy level. Needs 1–2+ hours of physical activity daily — running, fetch, hiking, or hunting. Without proper outlets, they can become anxious or hyperactive.
Training
Highly trainable and eager to please. Gentle, consistent methods work best. Excel in obedience, agility, and field trials. Early training and socialization are important.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality diet for active medium-sized dogs. Adjust portions based on activity level. Some may benefit from joint or coat supplements.
