Information

The Briard is an ancient French herding breed, once used to protect and move sheep across rugged farmland. With their strong work ethic, intelligence, and natural protectiveness, Briards have long been valued as both livestock guardians and loyal family companions.

They are large, muscular dogs covered in a long, slightly wavy double coat that protects them from the elements. Their expressive eyebrows and beard give them a thoughtful, almost human-like appearance. Despite their size and power, they are deeply affectionate and sensitive with their family.

Briards are known for being independent thinkers with a strong protective instinct. Early training and socialization are essential to help them become confident, well-adjusted companions.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Briards are generally healthy but can be prone to hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and bloat. Regular vet visits and genetic screening are essential.
Grooming
High-maintenance. Their long coat requires brushing several times per week to prevent mats and tangles. Regular ear checks and nail trims are also necessary.
Exercise
Moderate to high needs. Briards enjoy long walks, hikes, and mentally engaging tasks. They thrive when given both physical activity and a sense of purpose.
Training
Very intelligent and responsive, but independent. They do best with experienced handlers who can offer clear boundaries, gentle guidance, and early socialization.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality large-breed formula. Monitor for bloat (gastric torsion), especially around exercise and meals. Consider joint support supplements as they age.
