Information

Originally bred along the border of England and Scotland, the Border Collie is considered the most intelligent dog breed in the world. Developed specifically for herding sheep with precision and intensity, today they’re celebrated as elite working dogs, canine athletes, and loyal companions.

Border Collies are medium-sized, athletic dogs with intense eyes and an always-alert posture. Their coats can be rough or smooth, and come in various colors — most commonly black and white. What sets them apart, however, is their mind: sharp, quick, and constantly seeking stimulation.

They thrive in active homes that offer structure, challenge, and daily purpose. Without enough mental and physical activity, they can develop obsessive or destructive behaviors. This is a breed that needs a job, whether it's herding, agility, obedience, or advanced tricks.

Overview

The Border Collie is the ultimate working dog — endlessly smart, tireless, and deeply devoted to their task and handler. They’re famous for their intense "eye," used to control livestock, but that focus also translates to learning complex commands, agility courses, and tricks most dogs could never master.

These dogs are not casual companions. They need commitment, purpose, and an owner who can match their drive. But for the right person, a Border Collie is more than a pet — it’s a partner.

Whether herding sheep or chasing flying discs, this breed will give you everything it has — and expect the same in return.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Generally robust but predisposed to hip dysplasia, Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA), Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), and epilepsy. Health screening is essential with breeders.
Grooming
Moderate grooming needs. Brush weekly (more during shedding season) to prevent matting and manage undercoat. Bathe occasionally. Check ears and trim nails regularly.
Exercise
Extremely high. Needs at least 1–2 hours of active, structured exercise daily. Mental stimulation is just as important — training, puzzle toys, herding, agility, etc.
Training
Border Collies live to learn. They pick up commands quickly and thrive on complex tasks. Use positive reinforcement and keep sessions dynamic and challenging.
Nutrition
Feed a high-protein, high-quality diet for active medium-sized dogs. Monitor weight and energy levels — especially when working or in sport.
