WEIGHT
20-30 pounds
LIFE SPAN
12-15 years
Information

The Beagle is one of the world’s most beloved hound breeds, originally developed in England for hunting rabbits and hare. With an excellent sense of smell and a love of adventure, Beagles are still used in scent detection but are more commonly found as fun-loving family pets.

Compact and sturdy, Beagles have a short coat, long floppy ears, and an ever-wagging tail. Their personalities are curious, outgoing, and often mischievous. They thrive in social settings and get along well with children and other dogs.

While affectionate and friendly, Beagles are scent-driven and may wander if off-leash. Their training requires patience and consistency, as they’re smart but easily distracted — especially by smells.

Overview

Beagles are joyful little explorers with an endless love for sniffing and socializing. Their happy-go-lucky attitude makes them ideal for families, and they’re usually great with kids and other dogs.

While they may look small, they have big personalities — and even bigger noses. Beagles love following scents, so secure fencing and leash training are a must. They enjoy company and can get anxious or destructive if left alone for too long.

For those who want a playful, cheerful, and loving dog that’s always up for an adventure (or a snack), the Beagle is a classic choice.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Beagles are generally healthy but may be prone to ear infections (due to their floppy ears), hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and hypothyroidism. Maintain a healthy weight and check ears weekly.
Grooming
Very low maintenance. Weekly brushing keeps the coat tidy. Clean ears regularly and trim nails as needed. They shed moderately year-round.
Exercise
Beagles need daily walks and time to sniff — it’s how they explore the world. Mental enrichment (like scent games) is also important to keep them happy and avoid boredom.
Training
Smart but scent-driven. Training requires patience, consistency, and rewards. Their strong nose can distract them, so keep sessions fun and short. Early socialization is beneficial.
Nutrition
Feed a portion-controlled, balanced diet. Beagles love food and are prone to obesity, so avoid overfeeding and watch treats. Puzzle feeders can help slow down eating.
