Basset Hound

HEIGHT
11-15 inches
WEIGHT
40-65 pounds
LIFE SPAN
10-12 years
Information

The Basset Hound was originally bred in France and Belgium for hunting small game, particularly rabbits, thanks to its incredible sense of smell and tracking ability — second only to the Bloodhound. Today, it's better known as a charming family companion with an unmistakable look.

This breed is instantly recognizable by its long, droopy ears, sad-looking eyes, and low-slung, heavy body. Though they may appear lazy, Bassets are surprisingly tenacious when following a scent. Their sense of smell is incredibly sharp, and they’ll often tune out the world when on a trail.

Basset Hounds are friendly, patient, and affectionate. They’re good with children and other pets, making them a popular choice for families. However, they can be stubborn, and their strong noses often lead them to mischief without proper supervision and training.

Overview

The Basset Hound is a low-energy, big-hearted breed that thrives on affection and routine. Their unique appearance — with long ears and sad eyes — is matched by a sweet, loyal temperament that makes them wonderful companions.

They’re not fast, but they’re focused. If they catch a scent, don’t expect them to come back until they’ve investigated. Inside the home, Bassets are couch-loving cuddle bugs who enjoy a good nap just as much as a good sniff.

While training can take patience, their charm and devotion make it all worth it. For anyone seeking a loyal, low-key dog with a lot of personality, the Basset Hound is a classic favorite.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Bassets are prone to ear infections due to their long ears, as well as back and joint issues from their low-slung build. Watch for obesity, which can worsen joint strain.
Grooming
Weekly brushing is enough to manage shedding. Clean their ears regularly to prevent infections. Keep skin folds dry and nails trimmed.
Exercise
Moderate needs. Daily walks and sniffing time are important, but they don’t require intense activity. Avoid jumping or stairs due to their back structure.
Training
Can be stubborn. Positive reinforcement with treats works best. Consistency and patience are essential. Early socialization helps with confidence and manners.
Nutrition
Feed a portion-controlled diet to prevent weight gain. Joint health supplements may help. Avoid overfeeding — these dogs love to eat.
