HEIGHT
18-23 inches
WEIGHT
40-65 pounds
LIFE SPAN
12-15 years
Information

Despite its name, the Australian Shepherd was developed in the United States to herd livestock on farms and ranches. Renowned for their intelligence, work ethic, and trainability, Aussies excel in obedience, agility, and just about any canine sport you throw at them.

Australian Shepherds have a medium build, a lush double coat, and often stunning eye colors – including blue, amber, or heterochromia (two different eyes). They're known for their expressive faces and boundless enthusiasm.

This is not a breed for sedentary homes. Aussies are happiest when given a task or purpose and are ideal companions for active individuals or families. Without mental stimulation and daily exercise, they can become bored, vocal, or destructive.

Overview

The Australian Shepherd is a brilliant, energetic partner for those who love to move, think, and explore. Originally bred to work long days on ranches, this dog thrives on structure, activity, and deep bonds with its humans.

They are fiercely loyal and protective of their families, often forming strong attachments to one person. They're excellent with children and make great watchdogs — alert but not aggressive.

Whether they’re herding sheep, running agility, or chasing a frisbee, Aussies give 100%. They’re not couch dogs — they’re companions in motion, always ready for what’s next.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Generally healthy, but may inherit hip dysplasia, eye problems (such as cataracts or Collie Eye Anomaly), and MDR1 drug sensitivity. Responsible breeding and health testing are key.
Grooming
Their double coat requires brushing 2–3 times a week, more during seasonal shedding. Regular ear checks and nail trims are essential. Bathing as needed.
Exercise
Extremely high energy – they need at least 1–2 hours of activity daily. Ideal for owners who enjoy hiking, running, agility, or other dog sports.
Training
Highly trainable and eager to please. They love to learn and need consistent mental engagement. Without structure, they may develop neurotic behaviors like herding kids or chasing shadows.
Nutrition
Feed a balanced, high-quality diet for active medium-sized breeds. Watch portion size and avoid overfeeding, especially if daily exercise needs aren’t met.
