Information

The Australian Kelpie is a legendary herding breed developed in Australia to handle the demanding job of managing livestock across vast, rugged terrain. Renowned for their intelligence, stamina, and independence, Kelpies can work all day without tiring – and often prefer it that way.

Athletic and medium-sized, Kelpies have a lean, muscular build and alert expression. Their coat is short and weather-resistant, coming in various colors including black, red, chocolate, and tan. Though bred to work, they also make excellent companions for active households that can meet their physical and mental needs.

Kelpies are not couch potatoes. Without a job to do or space to run, they can become bored and frustrated. They need experienced owners who understand working breeds and can provide structure, training, and a highly stimulating lifestyle.

Overview

The Australian Kelpie is a workaholic with a heart of gold. Designed to herd sheep across wide open land, Kelpies are happiest when they have a job, a task, or a challenge to tackle. For active and experienced dog owners, this breed offers unbeatable loyalty, responsiveness, and endurance.

Though affectionate with family, Kelpies are highly independent and not typically clingy. They’re more interested in motion than cuddles and thrive in rural or highly active homes. Whether they’re herding animals, running agility, or training for tricks, one thing’s for sure — a Kelpie will keep you moving.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Kelpies are typically healthy, long-lived dogs but may develop hip dysplasia or progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). Choose breeders that test for genetic conditions.
Grooming
Low maintenance. Their short coat needs occasional brushing and seasonal deshedding. Regular ear cleaning and nail trims are all that’s required.
Exercise
Extremely high energy. Needs more than just walks — running, hiking, agility, obedience, or herding work are ideal. Without enough activity, behavioral issues can arise.
Training
Exceptionally smart and responsive. Loves to learn but may get bored easily — training should be positive, varied, and consistent. Best suited for experienced handlers.
Nutrition
Feed a balanced diet suited to high-energy, medium-sized breeds. Ensure adequate protein and monitor weight, especially if not actively working or exercising heavily.
