LIFE SPAN

Information

Australian Cattle Dogs are highly intelligent and easily trained but can become dominant or destructive without firm, consistent leadership and daily activity. They are naturally wary of strangers but deeply devoted to their families. Socialization is key from puppyhood to avoid territorial or reactive behavior.

Their short, weather-resistant double coat is easy to care for but does shed heavily during seasonal changes. Common health issues include hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and deafness, especially in merle or heavily white-coated individuals.

Overview

The Australian Cattle Dog, also known as the Blue Heeler or Queensland Heeler, is a rugged herding breed developed in 19th-century Australia to handle cattle over long distances and harsh terrain. It was created by crossing native Dingoes with Collies and Dalmatians, resulting in a strong, agile, and durable working dog with high intelligence and unmatched drive.

This breed is deeply loyal and often forms intense bonds with one person. It is incredibly alert, protective, and always looking for a task. The Cattle Dog isn’t a couch companion—it thrives when mentally and physically challenged and excels in herding, agility, obedience, and other structured activities.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Check for hip and eye issues, and screen for deafness early. Annual vet exams recommended to catch genetic conditions early.
Grooming
Brush weekly, more during shedding seasons. Coat is low-maintenance but durable. Clean ears and trim nails regularly.
Exercise
Needs 1–2 hours of daily activity—herding, running, or problem-solving games. Without this, behavioral issues are likely.
Training
Thrives on training and jobs. Responds best to firm but positive methods. Socialize early to reduce reactivity.
Nutrition
Feed a high-protein, active-dog formula. Maintain lean muscle mass and monitor for joint health.
