Information

Anatolian Shepherds are highly intelligent and instinctively protective. Early socialization and firm, consistent training are essential to ensure they remain well-balanced and manageable. They are not aggressive by nature but will act decisively if they perceive a threat.

Their short to medium coat is weather-resistant and only requires occasional brushing, with heavier shedding during seasonal changes. Health-wise, they are generally robust but may be prone to hip dysplasia, entropion (eye issue), and bloat. They require space to roam and a job to stay mentally and physically fulfilled.

Overview

The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is an ancient guardian breed originating from the rugged landscapes of Turkey. Bred to protect livestock from predators like wolves and bears, this large, self-reliant dog has earned a reputation for endurance, courage, and strong territorial instincts. It is still used worldwide as a working guardian but can also serve as a companion to experienced, responsible owners.

Naturally calm and watchful, Anatolians form deep bonds with their families but are often aloof with strangers. They are not typical “pets” and do best in rural homes with a clear purpose and strong leadership. Urban environments or first-time dog owners are not ideal for this breed.
