American Water Spaniels are alert and eager to please but can be a bit reserved with strangers. They’re highly trainable with consistent, positive reinforcement. Early socialization is important to prevent shyness or excessive barking, which the breed is known for if under-stimulated.

Their coat needs brushing several times a week and occasional trimming to prevent matting. Common health concerns include hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and skin allergies. They do best with active families who spend time outdoors and include the dog in daily life and adventure.

The American Water Spaniel is a rare, all-American breed developed in the Midwest, particularly Wisconsin, to work in marshes, rivers, and boats. It combines the skills of a water retriever and flushing spaniel in a compact, muscular body. This breed was designed to be versatile—able to retrieve from boats, navigate dense brush, and serve as a loving family companion all in one.

Eager, friendly, and intelligent, the American Water Spaniel thrives when given tasks and companionship. Though originally bred for hunters, it adapts well to family life and enjoys being part of daily routines. Its curly or wavy waterproof coat helps it thrive in wet, chilly environments.
