Information

American Hairless Terriers are eager to learn and respond well to positive reinforcement training. They’re active, clever, and enjoy interactive play, making them a good match for families, singles, or older kids. Early socialization ensures confidence and reduces barking or suspicion of strangers.

Hairless individuals require regular skincare—gentle baths, sun protection, and moisturizers to prevent dryness or irritation. They're also sensitive to cold and may need clothing in cooler weather. Health-wise, they are generally robust, but potential concerns include skin sensitivity, allergies, and patellar luxation.

Overview

The American Hairless Terrier is the only native U.S. hairless breed, developed from the Rat Terrier in the late 20th century. Designed to offer all the spunk and drive of a terrier without the fur, it’s an excellent choice for allergy-prone families or those seeking a low-maintenance coat. The breed also comes in a coated variety, but the hairless version is more well-known.

This energetic, compact companion is curious, intelligent, and friendly with people and pets. Though born from working terrier roots, they’re more companion-oriented today, thriving in active homes that provide play, attention, and structure. Their alert nature and bold personality make them excellent watchdogs despite their small size.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Skin care is key: avoid sunburn, dryness, or rashes. Hairless dogs may need vet-monitored moisturizers. Monitor joints for patella luxation.
Grooming
Hairless = no brushing, but skin must be bathed weekly. Coated types need light brushing. Both need ear and nail care.
Exercise
Daily play and short walks keep them happy. Great in agility and interactive games.
Training
Smart and responsive. Early training and socialization help limit barking and promote confidence.
Nutrition
Feed a balanced small-breed diet. Avoid fillers that may trigger allergies or skin flare-ups.
